I am considering using a Paper Wheel. . .

Who has a Paper Wheel and what do you think?

I have 10" paper wheels. One for sharpening and one for stropping the bur. However, mine our mounted on a high speed motor. I would advise mounting on a low speed motor. It does take a lot of practice before you get good at it. RichardJ is our paper wheel expert. You might want to send him a PM. He taught me everything I needed to know about using paper wheels.

I found the Paper Wheel System wholesale at $15 I'll get next time I place a knife order.

I have a Harbor Freight 8" grinder that I got when I purchased the HF Belt Sander ; )

Thank You for telling me about the HF Belt Sander its changed my life : ) I learned a lot about blade edges and profile since grinding some blanks ; ) I can easily set an even edge profile angle by hand and eye sight now. I think I'll get the hang of paper wheel sharpening pretty quickly.

there are cheap paper wheels which suck. the $15. dollar ones sound cheap. get the good wheels at grizzly imports or at a woodcraft store. you can find a dealer for the wheels at this link http://www.sharpeningwheels.com/

They appear to be the same as Razor's Edge (Charlie's Wheel of Fortune "Slicing Edge" Wheel System) the price is the distributors price not retail. I may decide to sell them if it works out.

I got the Paper Wheel Sharpening System last evening and I mounted the polishing paper wheel.

I sharpened (polished) the edges of a couple camillus carbon v knives an CS OSS and CS Oyabun. The advantage of the paper wheel that I see is speed and the ability to watch the edge bevel as it contacts the paper wheel surface. Its possible to make the edge straight and uniform and mirror polished razor sharp. Also with the other grinding paper wheel is should be easy to profile or repair the edge.

I am going today to buy another dedicated bench buffer/grinder with extended shaft which is designed as a buffer rather than a grinder.

I need some more practice with the paper wheel. . .

As with the belt sander, bench grinder and now the paper wheel system and a few blank blades I am learning about edge profile, blade thickness and what makes a knife sharp and cut in a designed manner.

Its interesting and fun right now : ) I am also interested in forging and metallurgy. . . I need a forge, blower, coal, fire, hammers, tongs, anvil and vice. . . : )

I got lucky today! The HF 8" 3/4 HP Buffer/Grinder is on sale for $10 off plus I had a 20% off coupon so I got it for $47.99 : ) I am so cheap I squeak!

I mounted the paper wheels and applied the special sauce per instructions.

I let ya'll know the progress if you can tolerate the boredom.

Any tips are welcome. . .

Thank You Richard J and Culpeper for your help and advice.

Well here I go again posting to myself : )

I balanced and trued the wheels (I build and true bicycle wheels so this is a bit different but second nature to me) and doped them again with green wax on the grinding wheel and white polishing paste on the polishing wheel.

All my knives are sharpened so I've got nothing to do on the paper wheels! : (

I like the paper stropping wheel I'm not to fond of sharpening wheel in the kit. I didn't have much luck with it. I guess I need to try again.

Today I used the Paper Wheel to polish the edge of a Rite Edge Chinese pocket knife that was shaving sharp, then sharpened it a bit more with a ceramic rod and now its razor sharp and will shave like a straight razor!

I have been searching suppliers on the web for a leather covered 6" honing wheel for my power sharpener with no luck. Does anyone know where I can get one or do I have to make my own? I have tried paper wheels, wood wheels, etc. but still like to use leather for my honing.

No sorry I have a belt sander but no leather belt yet as I opted for the paper wheel. I may get a leather belt as another option ; )

I have noticed a "leather covered wheel" I have seen felt wheels. Also leather belts for a belt sander are available from several places on the internet.

I use by hand a ceramic rod mostly and leather strop sometime.
