How does the Gerber Steadfast rate?

I am looking for decent field knife to go with my combat gear for overseas use. What do you guys think of Gerbers reproduction of its LMF I in the form of the Gerber Steadfast ?

I suggested one of these to Noss for testing some time ago, but it so far hasn't made it into the testing lineup. It looks plenty heavy duty, but it uses some kind of theaded fastener to hold the hilt together (looks like a recessed nut or something), and I'd like to see how they made the tang to accomodate this before I fully trusted it.

I have no experience with the steadfast....it may well be a good knife, but I have not been favorably impressed with several of Gerber's other imported products and tend to avoid them.


The USA made LMF II as tested by Noss and the Prodigy are very good well made knives....I would think either should serve well as a deployment knife. I thought the LMF was a little heavier than I like for a 5" knife, so I got a prodigy instead and so far been very happy with it. Gerber has changed the steel on these from 12c27 to 420HC, the prodigy I have is 12c27 which I prefer but the newer ones are 420HC which is probably OK too. The only way to tell which steel it is to check the orignal packaging the knives themselves are not marked with the type of steel.

The tang looks ok considering the .22 blade thickness....still would much rather go with a prodigy or lmf.

I don't really like the design of that knife nor did I like the original one. I have no experience with one so what the hell do I know. :D
