Does anyone own one of these rifles? if so, do you know some way to slightly lower the front sight? I took it to the range not too long ago and at 100yards I had to aim several inches below my 12 inch target to hit the center. aside from that problem and the stubborn bolt it's a lot of fun :thumb:

I have one. I cut the barrel down on mine so I no longer have a front sight on it. The one I have was in bad shape when I got it. Before I did this I don't remember having any problems with the front sight at 100 yards. I'm not sure how to fix this other than trimming it down but don't do this until you explore other options. I cut mine down because the barrel was in rough shape near the end portion of the barrel. I was going to put a scope on it but I never did. The rifle was in poor shape so it was just a project rifle I bought. I bought it for 100 bucks. I would like to get another one in better shape. Mine was made in like 1905.

They are fun to shoot and ammo is cheap.

Here is a video on tuning up one.

I've got an M44. Excellent condition, fantastic trigger (mine must've been a fluke ;) ), beautiful and butt ugly at the same time. Love it. :thumb:

EDIT: I totally misread your question before answering the first time.

If you're having to aim below your target, lowering the front sight would make it worse. You need the front sight taller, not shorter. Is your rear elevation slider set to 100?

I agree. Try adjusting or shimming the rear sight before messing with the front sight. Also have someone else try and shoot it since people shoot different and there may be nothing wrong with the sights at all. A friend of mine shoots about two inches different on the same rifle a I do so this could be a factor. Try some different ammo also as kiah suggested.

Yes it is.

while I was at the range I had several people try it and they all had the same problem.

This looks like a very useful mod, though it takes a good bit of work: http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting/mosinfrontsight/index.asp. I wouldn't trust myself to drill those holes without a press, but I suppose it could be done if you were really careful. There's also a simpler mod noted at the bottom of the page.

mtb 26: Thanks. It is a bad ass rifle.:D

G. Scott H.: good find. Adjusting the height of the front site may be your answer. I didn't have the ringed front sight like in the article on mine.

I read that the Mosin-Nagant rifles were sighted in with fixed bayonets.

Well what ever they were, here's a piece of advice - don't let a 5 year old shoot it. Too much kickback for a kid. Damn near busted my shoulder

before you mame your rifle, try different ammo, maybe you are shooting super light bullets that are traveling faster than the original tested. if shooting heavier (like brown bear 203gr soft points) ammo doesnt bring your shots down, then have a gunsmith check it out and do the work.
