I'm interested to know what people here think the best all-around knife under $50 is. I know a lot of this might be personal preference, but there has got to be some that are way better than the rest for that price range.

How about the KA Bar heavy bowie?

Very nice one, I own one.
Decent steel, one of the best choppers for the price.

Slipfire apparently broke one into 50 pieces but he never told us the story on that one. ;)

Excellent links Mac. Good variety in that selection.

Steel. What use do you want the knife for?

for me a one hand opening folder with a clip, a dependable lock and a blade that will hold a good edge is a must, with $50, I would get an Endura or Delica 4 from Spyderco.

After that, I would save up for a huntsman SAK or a multitool (vic spirit or LM blast).

I'm not sure really. I've got some big knives which I haven't really used yet. I've got that fake Jungle King, which I wouldn't trust now, and I just got my Cold Steel GI Tanto and Frosts Mora Clipper yesterday, both of which I'd trust from what I've heard and seen on this site.

I'm going to use the Mora this year when I go on vacation. I'll use it for cleaning fish, and maybe test it out carving stuff for fun. Nothing too heavy. And I really want to someday soon go camping with minimal equipment and want a knife I can count on. I think from what I've seen in the destruction tests here that the GI Tanto would be good for that.

I was just wondering what other knives under $50 would be really exceptionally durable and would hold a really good edge.

Don't forget some of the other knives that were tested here and did well that are are under $50 like the buck nighthawk (or the buck 119 it wasn't tested but many people swear by it). also the cold steel bushman, the gerber LMF2's little brother the Gerber Prodigy (I believe its the same steel and blade design but smaller handle)

for camping/hiking/fishing a mora clipper and a huntsman sak will handle most anything you will likely need done, unless you are going to be cutting your way through the jungle or building a log cabin (this is where machetes and axes come in). a fiskars wood saw is great for gathering firewood and can be used to cut wood for an emergancy shelter without the weight of an axe. for $50, you could get all 3!

hey guys, my friend jusdt called me to ask if 1095 was a good steel, cause he wants to buy another ka bar, so I told him to go for the heavy bowie if he was gonna get one.
I'm just wonddering, how was factory edge on the heavy bowie?
I mean, if it's dull that's okay, but it wasn't ridiculously thick or anything thats gonna take regrinding right?

Mine was shaving sharp, Tiawan puts good edges on.
The steel is 1085 btw.

yeah I knew that, I actually told him I think it'd be better for his needs. (not that there is probably too much of a drastic difference)

thats good to hear, I'm glad he's getting it.

That depends on the intended use. For example, the Buck 119 is a great buy but if you're looking for a lightweight edc folder instead it's not going to do you any good. Similarly an Opinel fillet knife can't chop worth crap compared to just about any fixed blade camp knife.

With a little extra dough ($65) some quite interesting folders become options such as the composite Kershaw leek (d2 edge) and the Fallkniven U2.

I suggest the Ka Bar bowie also

wow!
Idk why, but I thought the kabar bowie was going to have a thick edge or something (until mac told me otherwise) but that thing had one of the nicest factory edges for a 50$ knife that you could ever have.
It was shaving sharp, had a good polish, was the perfect thickness and it looked convexed to me.
:D
pretty cool.

I really want one.
that handle is comfy.
I would say because it is so large, it's more confy than my DFLE's.
it has more cushion to it.
and the hook at the end is just perfect.

I NEED one.
