Cool ! I have been meaning to buy one of these for the longest time.
They are a great e tool and outstanding choppers, only cost about $20.

Yeah they do seem like a great value. :)
They do. I have a Gerber folding spade and it's great at digging but it's heavy to carry in the field. Not sure the CS is better in this area or not.

I am with you, I am not into carrying more weight than I need to. :D

NO! WRONG! Only take the right tool for the job! A shovel is intended only to dig! You're all blasphemous bastards! :D
By the way, I should sharpen and try with my swiss straight shovel, sure it's good at it too.

CS has the weight at 26.6 oz. in their catalog and according to Doug Ritter's write up, the Gerber NATO shovel weighs 36.5 oz. Even the CS shovel is kinda heavy to lug around unless you now you are going to need it.

The CS shovel would probably dig better if you could adjust the angle of the head like with the folding shovels, but I would think that having a fixed head/no moving parts would make it a better chopper.
Madnumforce, those Swiss shovels look nice, I have heard that they are heavy and do make good choppers.
Madnumforce: This is knifetests.com of course were blasphemous. :D
Cool looking spade.
xxo: I'm not sure the Gerber would last long at chopping. It's welded together and not very heavy looking welds either.Plus the handle design would suck for this anyways. I think the CS would be a lot tougher when it comes to chopping providing the handle doesn't break. Thanks for posting the weights. I need to order one and try it. If I don't pack it in the field it would be great to keep in the truck.
The wood handle seems pretty sturdy, though some people do break them when throwing.
If CS came out with a polypro replacement handle it would be near bomb proof.

What an excellent idea! I've never had any of their polypro stuff in hand, is it as rigid as wood?

The polypro is not near as rigid as wood in longer lengths like CS's canes, but seems it would be plenty rigid in a shovel/tomahawk length. We've been suggesting polypro handles for these items in the Cold Steel lineup for a while now, hoping Lynn and the boys would pick up the idea. I don't know if anything's come of it yet, as I haven't checked in at the CS Forums for a while (I need to sign in and see what's happening). :thumb:
It is one of the things I have been lobbying for over on the CS forum along with a 10 in. blade "Magnum" Bushman, a "GI" style Bowie and some other stuff.
The shovel handle is short and thick so I think it would be plenty ridgid in polypro.

I have 2 of these and I love em.I only sharpen the sides for chopping I leave the front blunted so it'll be tougher for digging.
