View Full Version : Edge Retention Machine in the works.
One of the things I have been working on as of late. It's one of the reasons I haven't done many D-tests as of late.
Theory of machine:
to make controlled repetitive cuts in Sisal rope. The machine contains a certified industrial testing load cell. ( they ain't cheap). The load cell interfaces with a computer and graphs the cutting pressure in Excel. This weight will increase as the knife dulls and will show the weight/pressure per cut. The machine makes 2 slice cuts per cycle for as many repetitions as I program in. The machine is all automated including the rope feeder. All testing is hands off and under machine control. It can do a slice cut or a push cut.
I have made 3 prototypes and had to work out many variables to get the most exact results possible. It's cost a lot time and money but it has been fun and interesting. It still has some finale work needed before I'm ready to start testing. No dates yet. I plan to devote some time to this in order to expand other areas of testing here at KT. :thumb:
Oh and that is a Busse FBM mounted in the machine. :D

Pfiou... that's HUGE! Congratulations Noss! Where are the "itznotzientifik" moaners now? Maybe one day you'll be the leading knife testing authority in knife community, recognized worldwide... and you would desserve it considering the time and money you spend to provide independant unbiased resulsts for everybody that have eyes to see and brain to analyse.
Hooray for Noss!
Way cool!!
Noss you have outdone yourself again.
Can't wait until you get it up and running.

What a great idea!
I can't wait to see the comparative results of different steel, different edge grinds, edge texture, blade thickness. . .
How long does it take to see a change in cutting ability.

I'm not sure it will be ever world recognized but it will be here for those who are interested. I'll continue forward and will see what happens over time. Thanks man.
xxo: Thanks. Not sure when it will be ready but I have made a lot of progress on it.
wildjim: I have tried a few different knives and steels on it. I just haven't recorded any results as of yet so I haven't been able to compare much. On some of the low carbon steel blades it doesn't take long before the edge is completely lost. I still have much experimenting to do though.

man , you are sooooo crative !
great job !
Noss you are the man!
I was higly impressed by the COLD STEEL BUSHMAN SPEAR and SOG Seal 2000 tests but this monster machine looks like it belongs to a Stephen Spielberg's movie! :)
Congratulations and keep 'em coming!

Once again Noss you have outdone yourself and of course your results will be noticed globally because they will be independent and not vendor specific - it also proves beyond doubt that you are committed to the cause and your beliefs - and willing to put your money where your mouth/tests is, which is more than can be said of most of your armchair critics. Of course you do know that one set of moaners will be replaced by another. I also know this, those who manufacture 'brittle' knives in the guise of hard use knives and sell them to our troops will have nowhere to hide because the skirts of their fans they have been hiding behind will be ripped apart !!
Go for it ...

Damn! Robo-Noss strikes again! First the dive tank, then the flex tester, now this. Noss is not just a knife tester, but a pretty decent mad scientist as well. :D I look forward to seeing this contraption in action. Rock on, bro!
Thanks men. I have the flu at the moment so I'll address some comments in more detail when I get over it.

Broosbrothers. That's a good one. :D
Not to worry my friend. I will always do the D-tests by hand. I prefer this method. I'll explore different methods from time to time though. I like building machines and machine testing has it's place but once a knife gets in a human hand all of this goes out the window. It still can give some interesting results and give new areas to look at.
Falcor: Thanks man. I have spent plenty on all of this. I'm in the hole money wise and I'll never recover it. Talk is cheap in the knife testing destruction game. It's been fun and I have learned a ton doing it. It's cool the internet lets people share it. People may hate you for it but if one does it honest an I've done my best to do so. Your going to step on some toes along the way.
vvk: Thanks man. I wonder if Spielberg is hiring for his next creature feature. :D
G. Scott H: Mad scientist ? I think my critics will agree with the mad part. :D Honestly I don't think most of them would know science if came up and bit them in ass. :p I'm not scientist but I do possess some ingenuity.

Glad that you up and about Boss Noss!! Just send your PayPal link and I will be happy to contribute to your machines- with NO obligation.
Falcor: Thanks I'm moving around. I got tired of staying in bed. Thanks for the offer I do appreciate it. :thumb: I just hate to take any money from you. I have no idea when it's going to be ready and would hate for anyone to put funds into at this time.

WOW Scary I hope you are getting some help? A week is a long time for the flu in my experience : (
What flu is it?
wildjim: Not sure what type of flu it is. I didn't go to the doctor. I getting over it so I should be good until next year. :D

Its scary this year with the H1N1 possibility. Now I go straight to the doctor with early symptoms. I used to wait it out but I got pneumonia a few years ago and it knocked me down pretty good for a week, then it required months to get full strength again. I didn’t know I had pneumonia and waited until a fever and lack of oxygen nearly killed me. I was so down and tired I almost didn’t go for the x-ray and that would’ve been a fatal mistake. The doctor wanted me in the hospital but I refused and took his medications at home (foolish but I made it : ) The doctor called me at home several times to check up on me so it was pretty serious! Anyway now I go to the doctor early just to be safe ; )
I hope you are getting well. Please don’t be foolish as me : (
I hear you. Thanks for the concern. I considered getting a flu shoot this year but I was to late. Pneumonia is rough stuff. Glad you recovered. I've never had it but that is what killed one of my elder family members.

Sorry to read about your family member's death.
Bacterial Pneumonia seems to be basically something inhaled, asparated into the lung which causes an infection, Viral Pneumonia is much worse and doesn't respond to antibiotics. I had Bacterial Pneumonia in one lung.
They have a pneumonia vaccine but gave it to me after I recovered. Its given once every five years if you ask for it.
I am probably freaking you out? As I have a knack for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time ; )
Get well soon. . .

The last time I used that method and called it scientific was in 5th grade when me and my brothers shot a little froggie up in an estes rocket. CS PRC special up into near orbit.

Noss, Do me a BIG favor don't mention this piece of shit and people like him.

Whoa!! Holy crap...... just: HOLY CRAP !!! I only now saw this thread and read through it. I must say I agree with everyone that you've outdone yourself yet again Noss, Bravo :thumb:! I generally like looking at open, matte finished machinery that gives this menacing impression that it'll rip ya apart if you make a wrong move. Not too bright :o, I know, but that's just me :D.
Thanks,

Thanks. Still plenty of work to be done before testing begins.
I haven't forgot about it men for those who are interested in this type of testing. :D

Just noticed this thread. WOW....I had no idea you were working on something like this!!!!
Now it makes sense that it's taken forever to get to the Bravo test. :D
Awesome looking contraption. Don't be stupid...call a patent attorney.
Marvin8: Thanks man. It's been fun. I'm not the first to build something like this. CATRA is the standard when it comes to machine knife testing but people rarely see results from these things.

How's this project coming along, Noss?
Gawrg: :D
IntellectualBarbarian: It's progressing. I made a few modifications to it. I'm still working on eliminating a few problems. I've decided not to cut all the way through the rope since wedging becomes a problem affects the measurement. The goal now is to use just the edge so I'm still working on the best program and method for this. I've been working on this for a long while now, this is the fourth prototype. The third proto was close to working but it had problems I couldn't eliminate due to the design. So it was scrapped all together. This forth design is solid though it just needs some tweaking.
proto number 3 ( scrapped )

Noss is going "scientific"! What will be left for the whiners to criticize?
Noss, you're really cruel: if you're making a machine testing more scientifically than none non of themever imagined to do, they couldn't even blame the hockey mask!
Very nice job, Noss. It's really incredible to see so much personnal investment in time, money, and thoughts, just for the sack of truth. You're really deserving praises.
Thanks man
They will always find something to bitch about. This is the only thing they know how to do. After all their little speeches about scientific testing not one of them will put their money where their mouth is. It's easy to have a big mouth and to act like they are smart. It's another thing all together to get off their asses and be smart. They are just posers, nothing more.

He$$ Noss, I thought you were kidding! The shop you usually test in looks like my bedroom! So I never figured you were into this kind of stuff. GREAT GOING!! Miss the knife tests, the pure organic nature of it was very refreshing, but I'm sure this machine will kick out some very useful data too.
Best to you bro,
Bone Doc
Yeah I'm kind of a techie with hydraulics and pneumatics. I've made some wild stuff in that shop. I never thought I would be doing knife tests in it. :D
Thanks

Noss - after experiencing only one lot of lambasting in three forums from just one test, my admiration for you went up 10 fold - you are sooo right, the keyboard commandos will find some lame pussfied excuse to rubbish the findings - so what!! Go for it:rockon:

Ya, me too Noss. I was rocked a bit when I first found your work, the mask and all, but quickly realized the value of what you were doing. While it would be impossible for a human to not have some variation, still the information gained was of immense value so I think the inherrent variation should be overlooked. At any rate, I am very impressed by your knoledge and the pure kahonas of setting out to make a machine like the one you are working on. NOSS for President!! Or at least I think you should have a segment on one of those outdoor shows!! :) GREAT work Noss, "Lets continue."
