I make these & keep them with my firesteels.
It has been flooding down here in Mississippi, and wet or not, these will start a fire if you have no dry tinder!

To make I cut my "Fat lighter" into a bar, drill a lanyard hole, and take some "Bailing" rope, tie it, and dip it in Melted wax.

To start

1.Shave your lighter

2.Un-ravel a piece of your rope (notice the wax!)

3. Hit it with your firesteel. (It ignites unbelievably easy, even wet, & burns long)

4. Light you "Fat Lighter

5. Light your wood!

6. Put out yor rope, you can hardly tell it is used, and you can re-use it many times.

I think this is the perfect companion to a firesteel, especially in wet conditions!

What a neat setup. Very clever.:thumb: I always like experimenting with different fire starters. I'm going to give this one a try. Thanks for sharing your technique.

Very nice set up. I did similar with so fat wood but it is kina sticky/smelly to keep in my pack unless it is in a ziplock bag....I was thinking of coating it with something.

The jute twine with wax is something I have been meaning to try out.

I have also heard of the jute twine and wax trick. I like messing around making fires when its raining/wet conditions, may come in handy one of these days, real easy for me to do, lots of woods a long lake champlain a long this one path.

I use a ferro-rod almost everyday during the winter months (wood-burning stove)..I
could just use matches or a lighter..but where's the fun in that? :D

Jute twine and wax works really good.. Now just in case I carry potassium permanganate and sugar. Works like a charm

where do you buy the potassium permaganate?

Nice setup, everything is keep together until used, thoughtful. I usually cheat and carry cotton balls soaked in vaseline and put in a baggie, the little buggers light right up a burn for a long time.

I get it in a pharmacy. Some places give it out with a prescription, but I actually had some problems as a kid and it was sued as a treatment so no problem in getting a prescription for it. Other places just sell it directly without asking any questions. At least most places in Europe work that way

Is it a powder or a liquid?

powder. i find it's easier to carry it that way since you don't have to worry about breaking something and having it spill all over

Fat Lighter recipe:

1 1/2 oz Wild Turkey bourbon whiskey
3 oz orange juice
1 oz half-and-half
Stir ingredients together in an old-fashioned glass half-filled with ice cubes, and serve.

It may not burn wood but should put a hole in your gut, LOL.
