Man, thats awesome!!

eatingmuchface
06-23-2008, 08:14 PM
1/2" thick maybe?

man!

I don't think the handles will last long, but I think it should do good.

how is the edge on it?

and mag, no rust!!
:D

Noss

The thickest part is .420" It's fat. This will be the thickest blade yet. The FFBM is .310"

Nice!

any chance for a field test and/or a chopping shootout?

Noss

EMF: It has a very sharp edge on it.

Noss

xxo: Maybe. If I have time, I can do a chopping shootout with some other blades in the shop.

A chopping beast for sure. Will be interesting to see how toughness and strength stack up. Breaking a 4/10" thick blade is going to be a challenge. I've heard many of these are 5160 steel or a similar spring-tempered steel?

Noss
06-23-2008, 08:26 PM
Also this one is only 12 inches overall length. It's not one of the bigger ones.

Noss
06-23-2008, 08:28 PM
will york: Yeah it does not look fragile. It's a lot steel to break.

Gman1128
06-23-2008, 09:06 PM
Wow .42 inches thick!! It makes an FFBM seem very thin and fragile!! :D

I also heard that these things are made of 5160 taken from old truck springs. I Don't know how true that is though.

Im gonna go out on a limb and predict that this knife will be one of the best tested yet!

eatingmuchface
06-23-2008, 09:15 PM
yeah... I think it will perfrom great.

this should be a great test for sure!

Noss

It's thick but it has a nice sort of balance to it. It seems very quick without being to heavy.

Magnum22
06-26-2008, 11:36 PM
hey guys. guess i should add some details.

the edge isn't stock. the knife came mirror polished and the more polished HI's are, the less sharp. the villagers come with a rough finish and great edges. anyway, i took it to the garage and gave it a good edge, which ruined the beautiful polish job so i sanded the whole thing to 600 grit.

also, in the regular use tests i don't think the khuk should be used since they are supplied with a karda for small cutting tasks. i recall the karda being ridiculously small on this piece.

the buffalo horn handles don't have the reputation of the wood handles.

you should also note that this is from one of the younger kami's and he basically scaled down the whole khukri, karda, and chakma rather than just shortening the blade. since this is just a destruction test, it's still a suitable knife. in fact, the most suitable. i'm sure Bura or Vim would have made it with a better handle and tools.

did you remember the side whack?

I'm really looking forwards to this one. Trying to break a hunk of steel like that sounds like quite a workout.

Apparently I need education: "younger kami's" "bura; Vim"

Are these custom made then?

Every himalayan import is handmade with old world techniques. A stone forge, a hammer, and tongs, mainly. Start to finish, made by one man (the kami) and maybe an assistant.

Bura's the royal kami, but Vim is my favorite. The one Noss is testing is made by Rajendra, and it was one of the first of his knives sold by HI.

just out of curiosity, what are the advantages to a blade of that shape?

Thecarotidpulse
06-29-2008, 10:08 PM
Steel that I can answer =)

Ok the Kukri's advantage is the multifunctionnality of the blade. The spine can be used as a hammer, the tip to be used to do some rougher carving/whittling like for instance sharpening a stick. The round part of the tip is used for general chopping (greater angle = better chopper and duller) as well as the angled portion of the middle blade, and the blade near the handle is used for fine whittling (sharper)

there is some info on this site, the info I just quoted is from Hugh MacManner's survival guide.

Thecarotidpulse
06-29-2008, 10:25 PM
Also apparently the middle blade is 60 Rockwell, but less at the tip and base.

http://himalayan-imports.com/faq/Construction.html

Dame i'm starting to like these blades now that i'm looking into them - Might get one instead of a Busse....

Will do. I have a question for you ? Is there some initial type of test to do on these when you get them ? I'm a little confused about this. I have seen this mentioned on the net but
I don't know the details on this. I can't seem to find anything specific about it.

I figured you would know ?

eatingmuchface
06-30-2008, 12:08 PM
I know the shape is just alot better for chopping too... I can't explain why, and I won't try.
mag loves khuks so he can answer that for you.

:D

Magnum22
06-30-2008, 02:12 PM
for the initial test, give it a good whack on a log to the side of the blade like a slap. i've given the khuk a few chops, but forgot that test. i doubt anything will happen since i did chop pretty hard with it trying to generate as much power as a large khukri would, so i'd say it was tested sufficiently.

as for the khukri's effectiveness, it's a combination of the forward weight which creates leverage and momentum plus the angle of attack from the canted blade which creates a shearing effect in the cut media. then there's the pure mass of HI's in general from all that steel.

Check out this review over at the SBG forum: http://sbgswordforum.proboards70.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=swordreviews&thread=5346&page=1. Dude had some troubles with his. Looking forward to your tests even more now. Speculation is that it isn't a HI khukri, but I can't tell for sure.

Noss

Interesting reading. Thanks for the link. Some say it was from House of Kukri also it didn't have the initials on it as a few noted.

07-02-2008, 01:13 AM
I don't know enough about khuks to tell who made it, but it sure doesn't look or sound like the sort o' quality people talk about in relation to HI. The review initially inluded "Himalayan Imports" in the title, which is why I linked to it. I doubt it's a HI product now, but if it IS a Khukuri House product, at least we know to steer clear of them. :D

Btw, I've been on the SBG forum for a couple years now, and even do the occasional review of a sword there. If you ever do test a Cold Steel sword to destruction like Savagesicslayer suggested, I know the guys over at SBG would dig it too.

Well their is a lot of chadder around here about that Kukuri. Im getting pretty excited about the test Noss. Let me just say im quite impressed with the cutting and chopping power of my Gurkah kukri. Just dont forget the gloves because its like a jack hammer!!!

Here is the description from Cold Steel regarding their Kukri.

The Kukri blade, with its markedly downward curved blade, has long been identified with the Gurkha Warriors of Nepal, the ferocious mercenaries who have who have wielded this blade for over 150 years in the service of the British Empire.

The Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri was inspired by Cold Steel President, Lynn C. Thompson’s close association with Dr. Maung Gyi, chief instructor of the American Bando Association, and a renowned martial artist with wide-ranging knowledge and skills. Under Dr. Gyi’s tutelage, Lynn gained insight into the full potential of the Kukri and learned it was not just a chopping weapon but a piercing, slashing, and smashing weapon as well. Smashing techniques allow the Kukri to function as a hammer or mallet or to deliver non-lethal blows in a self-defense role. A concentrated blow with the back of the blade can break bones or be lethal if directed at the head.

With Dr. Gyi’s input, Thompson designed a longer, narrower point for the Gurkha Kukri with more distal tapering to the spine. This resulted in a thinner, sharper point which can be deeply driven into thick, tough targets with minimal effort.

Finally a masterfully designed Kraton handle was added to maximize the blade’s fierce potential. Perfectly contoured and deeply checkered, it offers a superb non-slip grip and cushions the hand from the shock of the hardest blow.

The Gurkha Kukri’s VG-1 San Mai III¨ blade will out-chop any factory or handmade knives; including swords twice its size, even expensive, hand forged Japanese Katanas. It’s the heaviest Kukri on the market. The blade is almost an inch wider near the tip than at the handle, shifting the knife’s balance point forward to allow a substantial blow to be struck with minimal effort, using inertia alone to complete the cut.

Each Gurkha Kukri is supplied with a Secure-Ex¨ sheath to protect the blade and allow you to wear it safely and securely on your side always ready to defend you and your loved ones.
