View Full Version : Some New Cheap Kinves

I picked up the CTD knife Noss did a D test with and this other craptastic "sea camo" combat knife. The Bowie is nice, heavy, and feel solid and will be put to good use as a prybar/kinfe. This combat knife is pure crap. Handle is hollow plastic and not even good plastic at that. There are these notches on the back where the tang starts and they are sharp. I have no idea why they are there, thumb grip maybe?

I will probably grind them down making this knife even weaker than it is. But, for 7 dollars, I guess it is not bad. I have no clue as to what the steel is, assume it is stainless, it feel very light, like plastic. I am going to either beat the crap out of it, or give it to my friend who would not know any better.

Here are some pics: The third photo is a blade size comparison to the LMF

Weird. On the "sea camo" knife the serrations aren't bevelled (unless they're on the other side of the blade)? Does the other side look the same?

Nice pickup on the Cheap As Dirt Izan.

G. Scott H. : Yea man, lol. The serrations are on both sides. The blade was so dull I put it on a grinder and made new bevels. I also ground down those nasty groves near the tang. It is much nicer now and actually has an edge, don't know how well it will hold, I assume shitty. I will give some follow up information in this thread when I do some more work with it.

Oh, the very tip broke off when I threw it into the ground, the grass is made of harder materials I guess.

Nice score on the CTD. What kind of edge did yours come with ? Let us know how the other holds up if you beat the crap out it.

The rough use Bowie came with a drastic V edge. Sharp enough to chop, not much more. I am going to try to reshape it and attempt my first convex edge this weekend. I figure it is thick enough to get one on and if I grind the blade to oblivion, 9 bucks, and I get another one.

Izan you shouldn't have ground down the grooves on the sea cammo. That knife is a professional dive knife. When diving you should always have a buddy. A professional will give this knife to his buddy. In the event a dangerous sea creature such as a shark arrives on the scene, the buddy will grip the knife cutting his finger. The professional will then swim away in safety.

lol Seriously though, those groves hurt like a son-of-a-bitch, and now its nice and smooth.

could we see a pic with the work you've done on it?

tac: while your partner's finger is bleeding you're swimming away, knowing that your Wasp knife is at your side and your harpoon launcher is slung... wherever you'd sling such a thing

on a second glance.. those grooves look like a 5 year old's bitten into the tang of the knife...

A 5 yr old with like diamond teeth.

This is a short vid, better than pictures I think, maybe not as the quality sucks. No sound on my camera either, I had the bayonet tests going in the background. I was trying to show the ground off thumb groves and a half-assed convex edge. The knife is scary sharp and was slicing up some oranges tonight like butter. All-in-all, for 7 bucks, this knife is stating to grow on me. Although all it is good for is stabbing and cutting flesh like objects. ;)

nice job. I think you should put some padding possibly taped in place where the grooves were... just to pad your hand when youre using the forehand grip. How about some tire rubber.. possibly melted in place with steam...

Looks like a nice job on the edge, did you use the sandpapers and mousepad or freehand stone?

I like reading all the reviews the knife "experts" give on CTD.

"I own 100 combat knives and some I have used to fight with, this is by far the best I have ever used.
It holds a edge for ever and never needs sharpening."

Izan: Thanks for the video. The edge looks good.

Macgregor: Just ask them to show you all their scars from the knife fights. Also how many guys did they fight with them at one time. If they say less then
20 I know they are full of BS :D

Thanks guys. I put several hours into that edge and for my first attempt at putting a convex edge on from scratch, let just say I learned a lot about how it works. I was hitting the pommel against some sheetrock (drywall) and the plastic handle broke. So, I figure time for another first, paracord handle!

Thecarotidpulse: I wrapped sandpaper around a toilet paper roll with about 1/2" left of paper. It seemed to work good for getting the initial edge headed towards the convex path.

Dame Izzy... I daresay the knife looks 10x better with your handle on it! Much better in the hand too?

I've never heard of sandpaper on a toilet paper roll.. I guess you attached this to a drill... I"ll have to look it up.

You should send the picture of this knife to CTD... they could really improve on their model with your changes!!!

Represent man, as they say in the vernacular

I know its been, 3 years LOL! But no, its not. This knife has been between my mattress and will stay there. I moved last year and when unpacking I used this knife to cut tape and boxes, dulled in like 8 minutes. Put an edge back on it, and put it back. I figure if I need a knife handy, it will be sharp just long enough to do the job.

LoL, awesome follow-up!

And hey, you've got a tool for practicing sharpening and throwing should you ever feel the desire.

again, props on the follow-up! :thumb:
