a Canadian design, hunting/trapping knife supposed to reduce cutting drag.

Supposedly it's one of the knives that Canadian military personnel carry... (as a cooking/hunting knife)

I wonder how it'd actually stand up....
My guess is a better cutter than anything else because of the offcentered tang..

No info about the steel.

That would break during the wood batoning. I can't see it shopping well, wood digging, sheet metal, not a tough looking knife. But, I would love to see any knife go through the gauntlet. Noss has surprised the knife community before, maybe this knife would surprise more.

Aye I completely agree with you.. What i want to know is what's the big hype that all the hunters around here use it?

Maybe it would surprise us...

It might also be interesting to test the cheap cold steel knockoff of it.

The Grohmann is described simply as "high carbon German stainless steel". That leads me to suspect 1.4116 (X50CrMoV15), which seems to be the most common "high carbon stainless" used in many German knives. Interestingly (if, indeed, that;s what they're using), that's the same steel used in Cold Steel's copy. I have the CS version, and it's a decent enough little knife for light tasks, but I wouldn't expect it to hold up to Noss's tests for very long. The main differences between the Grohmann and CS offerings seem to be: The CS is supposedly mid-50s HRC, while the Grohmann is upper-50s. The Grohmann has a full tang, while the CS has a partial tang (a little less than half the handle, much like a Frosts Mora). And, the fit and finish on the Grohmann appear much nicer. I can't say how well the Grohmann would stand up to Noss, but I agree it would be interesting to watch.

something Grohmann would be cool, I think the #4 survival might fit in the best with Noss's tests.

Aye,

Thanks for the info Scott... how do you find the blade shape for cutting? if you do any hunting....

Basically what's with all the Hype? (other than the original being made in Nova Scotia)

Reduced cutting drag and all that

I haven't skinned anything with it, but I've used it to cut some pieces of thin leather for knife/sword projects and it does that very well. The shape of the edge also makes it very easy to sharpen, due to the mild curve. The knife is also very comfy and secure in the hand. Overall, it's a very nice little user knife. I'd bet the Grohmann excedes the CS in pretty much every way, so I can see how it would gain some popularity.
