View Full Version : Sending out e-mail using my name.

Moderators, it's possible that one of the members here is sending out e-mails in my name to clients and suppliers. We're 'scrubbing' my software and turning over all footprints to my attorney and a local law enforcement.
The reason I think it might be a member here is that in one of my last posts I mentioned contacting me in that manner. If you find out who it is, I intend to turn all info over to the authorities.
I'm not sure how this would be possible ? But if you PM me some more detailed info about this I'll look into it further.

Same here. I looked at his post about email and he didn't post an email address.

I'm not sure how much we could do. I also didn't see any email address posted in the thread, unless I'm looking in the wrong place.
And how would he know who your clients and suppliers are? Did you IM any of that info to somebody?
There is no email address listed in your post. If it is someone here they would have to go through the email system here and it would be marked it came from here. I need more info to look into this and I'm not even sure were to look but I'll try.

I was going to ask the same question. How would anyone here know who your supplies are ?

If he did IM it to somebody or mention it in an IM somewhere, it should e pretty easy to figure out who might be doing it (assuming they somehow acquired his email).

As a moderator I can't even find an email address for this user. Heck, I can't even figure out how to use this damn thing. I'm a useless moderator.
Sorry to hear about your troubles dude. Give Noss what you can and that is about all the moderators can advise.

Yeah thinking about it I'm not sure how it could be done from this forum. His email is not listed in public unless he posted it somewhere in a thread or gave it to someone in a PM.
The Tourist:
All a member can do here is send you an email through the forum system if you have your profile set to receive email from other members but this email would come to you only and not to anyone else.

The only reference to a client I can find is here
http://knifetest.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1489&page=3
Even then, it is impossible for us to see which person used your personal email, assuming they are actually a member here and not a guest. If the site email was used, it would say that the email came from user XXXXXX@knifetests.com or something to that effect. If that happened, then you should talk with the people at vBulletin.

Are you sure you didn't just had your mail account hacked? That's what happened to my brother, I received from him a spam mail, and few time later his account was closed (they certainly detected something wasn't normal). I don't know what happened next. Hope the problem will be solved as fast as possible, and that nothing more critical has been stolen.

Guys, I'm not a geek. I haven't a clue what went on. In the past I've even had cyber problems with Phil. (?)
I cleaned out the computer. I called Microsoft for additional info. I notified your moderators, from here I do not know what to do.
As for finding my e-mail address, I did not post it in a thread, but I did set up my account here permitting members to write to me. If they can obtain that address--a spam trap--perhaps they can hack my suppliers list. Like I said, I'm not a geek.
If you guys have suggestions, just post 'em here. I am going to lurk, I'll see them.

Have you exchanged emails with any members here? If so, let us know who it was (you could do it privately if you prefer). It might not do much, but I don't know what else to do.

I'm not a geek either. :D I'm not sure what I can do at this point. My advice is to look into any emails you received from members here if any ? From my knowledge a person can only send an email to you directly and not to anyone else. I will however check the IP's associated with your account and try and find something this way.
Okay I checked the Ip's and there is only one associated with your account. I checked it against all other members and got back zero. So it doesn't look like anyone has hacked your account.
Thanks mods for trying to help out with this issue. :thumb:

Thanks, guys. I think I got the thing repaired. It is possible that I was hacked, but it was only the spam trap. Worst case scenario I get a new hotmail account. Big whoop. That's what it's there for.
As for Phil, he cyber-stalked me through about three or four forums. I'd sign up, he show up within a week, and only respond to posts that I had made--within minutes.
I hadn't really done anything about Phil in months, except for our recent remarks in the post about Phil. I just don't believe in coincidences.
I started getting strange responses this afternoon. One supplier sent me a response of, "Chico, is this really you?" I did a few 'mea culpas' and straightened everything out.
Oh, well, back to the bike...
Thanks again, guys!:thumb:

Tourist you're a good writer, but not a smart man! Lose your hotmail account, & get a more serious account!!!!

Shhhh! Don't tell everybody...!
In many ways, the use of a spam trap does its job by doing this. Hackers aren't as bright as they think. Every key-stroke is always listed somewhere, and if someone hacked a worthless spam trap, then he did more damage to himself than me.
I figure it's like losing a credit card. Yeah, it's a pain to cancel the service, but in the end I haven't really lost anything. And sooner or later the guy screws up and chats up a "fourteen year old girl" who is actually an FBI agent with a bad attitiude. These guys always get caught.
It's the end of the day now. I cleaned my computer and talked to a few suppliers. I wrote two e-mails. The total event kept me off the highway for less than 30 minutes.
However, if a hacker gets caught he spends several years in prison with Aryan bikers.;)

Worse than that. He'll be banned from the Internet.

I'm really fascinated how some folks think that prison or low prosecution will affect any criminal action..Does't work that way! No,...no when you're nobody(ordinary citizen)
I agree, believe ... in "responsible action for Your own Security"
Where I live, if someone steals my credit card...I have few minutes to call the bank and stop my account, or my money will be gone... lost period!
Like what I said before get a serious account plus memory stick, memory box!
The last thing... don't tell anyone that you're rich...of course I just assuming
as you assuming that someone take over your PC from this site.;)

If you are going into the wild you need protection.
Research the internet for the best protection software!
BLEEPINGCOMPUTER.COM is a good place to start ; )

Or just abandon Windows and go for Linux, like I did. If you're not a gammer, or someone who uses professionnaly programs not compatible with Linux, you should easily adapt. Moderne distribs like Ubuntu "Karmic Koala" are designed to work well even without knowledge of Linux. There is a new version called Lucid Lynx, and it seems even easier to use for a Linux newbie. I'm on Linux since november, and never had any problem I couldn't fix. Hopefully, there is a lot of forums full of friendly guys ready to help you if you need something.

The internet is "not" the place to bare your soul!

Hotmail is your problem here. Yahoo and some of the other free webmail services are bad for it too, but Hotmail is the worst. It has nothing to do with members here, OS, antivirus software, etc. It's a bot that gets into random hotmail accounts and emails people you've received mail from. I get tons of spam from people I know aren't sending it, and they have no clue it's happening until someone tells them. They almost always use Hotmail or Yahoo. I have a spam trap Yahoo account and occasionally get spam from myself.
I suggest switching over to Gmail or some other more secure service, as it will just happen again and again with Hotmail.

(Before I respond, the reason I came here today was to monitor any potential hacking action in the AM hours. It looks like whatever we did worked.)
Kurodrago, this is where we disagree. I'll tell you why.
Lots of folks believe that the simple act of "arrest" (i.e., just being taken into custody) is a big deal. I regard it as a date for the prom. To shut up some very unprofessional cops last week I held my wrists out and told them that if they believed I had committed a crime or was withholding evidence they should arrest me on the spot. Notice that I am still in my home.
However, most "white collar guys" darn near lose their lunch. They look at a county holding cell as doing hard time!
In 1979 I was arrested for CCW. Frankly, I think most bikers--even guys who just ride with no club affiliation--face some form of misdeamor problem, if only a fine. I got 'cuffed and stuffed.'
While my picture and prints where being processed and my credit card was being authorized for my bail, I met a few guys--guys in the non-criminal range of folks. Most of the "been there. done that" guys were in the commons area, playing cards or sleeping. Ahhh, how worlds collide.
You take a hacker and toss him into a prison--even one like our area's Oakhill facility, which doesn't even have walls or a fence--and white collar guys go mental. In many cases this is the first time they have mingled with anyone outside 'polite society.'
I think all you would have to do is just introduce a hacker to his potential roommates in a lock-down--let him meet bikers or even guys who lost and an expensive computer to viruses and worms--and that scared little boy wouldn't even jaywalk in the future.
To the contrary, most bikers gain weight. They muscle up and make a few bucks playing Hearts or Euchre. Heck, after all of the housework I have do during this month of accelerated activity by my wife completing her school year, a place like Oakhill would be a spa.
