View Full Version : Richard J Custom
Richard sent me this knife he made a few months back to use and test out. It came razor sharp an holds its edge very well. I have been using it around the house to cut up boxes
open packages and just many everyday tasks and have done some sisal rope cutting with it. The neoprene handles are nice and big and very comfortable with no hot spots.
Here are a few photos of it.

i use 1075 that comes from cultivator discs. i just done a test on a piece of scrap that i ground down into a somewhat convex blade and heat treated it just like i do my other knives. i cut an 1/8" piece of nickel silver rod and a piece of 3/16" brass rod that was about 5/8" long. the edge wasnt hurt at all other than a rub mark from the brass. i then put a shaving sharp edge on and repeated the test. i had a piece of the brass rod left over from the first test balanced on the edge. in mid swing it fell off and the hammer hit the edge and took out a small chip. the edge where i had finally cut the rod in half was still fairly sharp even though the hammer head hit that area too but didnt chip the edge. i have pictures if anyone is interested. rje196021@gmail.com

i should mention that knife had some defects in the steel which kept me from selling it. the knife is still a good user. the steel had stress cracks which showed up after heat treat along the edge. i tried to grind past the cracks but they came back after the second heat treat. luckily this has only happened once.

thanks. back in the early 90's i made a knife for a friend to skin deer with but it took him 4 years to get a deer to use it on. when he finally shot a deer i was there the day he went to skin it out. he had forgotten about the knife i made him and went to use his s&w folder, which i asked to check out but stuck in my pocket instead. when he asked wtf i was doing with his knife i told him he's not using it to skin with. he then remembered the knife i made him. he ended up skinning his deer and 4 others and could have done more. this year he done 4 and he said it still shaves.

Awesome knife. Its got a great design and the handle looks really comfortable too.
Wow, 4 deer and still shaving sharp yet being undamaged after being hammered through a brass rod. Rich, you must do a fantastic job on the heat treat!

gman1128, the knife i hit with a hammer was a test blade only about 2" long. i done the test yesterday. the knife that skinned thoes deer was made in the early 90's. i'm going to take a piece of the steel and see if it will work as a tool bit for my friends lathe just out of curiosity. if the disc made from it can go through the ground hitting rocks that says something about the steel. as far as the heat treating goes i guess i just got lucky :D and found the right temperature. i rely on color to tell me when to quench. i heat the edge with a cutting torch with the oxygen turned down so the edge comes to temp slowly.

Hey Richard,
Nice knife, it'll be n ice to see what Noss makes of it in the D test.
Not too impressed with your advertising line tho... seems a bit out of place but I suppose you should use every attempt at marketing...
I suppose you use the mousepad and sandpaper technique for your sharpening? Or strop and compound? Or belt sander?

I like it. Any custom knife or rifle would be cool :thumb:

he's not going to destroy it, i gave it to him for a user. i use a belt sander to work up a burr for a convex edge. i remove the burr with paper wheels. as for my advertising line, i made it short and to the point.
It's just a user. I should have been more clear about this. Richard wanted me to use it and give him some feed back one it. This I have been doing. But he did tell me to whack it with a hammer into some wood last night on the phone. :thumb::D

Woot!
Good to see you over here Richard, we needed a guy like you here.
This forum pretty much rocks, as you don't have to deal with to many phucktards here.
Btw, I will be back in Ohio in a few days and will probly come out to your shop after that.
I really can't wait to pick up that skinner, sorry I haven't made it out there.
It was planned for me to get back a few weeks ago but my Dad got some of the first work in a long while and couldn't come and pick me up.
