I am looking for a fixed blade knife along the lines of a Fallkniven A-1. I think the impression I'm getting from this forum is that it's hard to beat the Fallkniven series.

I want a fixed blade knife with a black finish, 6-7 inch blade, comfortable handle, and really good steel.

Should I just save up and pick up an A-1? Or is there a knife out there someone would recommend instead?

Thanks,
Mike

there are alot of other knives just as good IMO.
ranger knives are good (they hold a good edge and have goo edge stability) and they are alot less expensive.
bark river knives are good too.
also, you can check out swamprats.

I've seen a lot of blades recommended to Fallkniven users...

The A1 itself is designed along the lines of the CS SRK, but the quality of the latter is much inferior.

Bark River knife and tool makes some good knives, though I understand that they are sometimes of varibale outcome and more expensive.

If I were you I'd look at the manufacturer forums for "bark river knife and tool" and "fallkniven" on "knifeforums.com" You'll see posts by owners of both companies.

With regards to edge retention, Fallkniven introduced a new supersteel with 50% more edge retention than the old VG10 supersteel. THis SGPS or Super gold powder steel is more expensive but I hear the only thing that can compare to it for edge qualities is INFI.

Also if I were you i'd go for the A1, or the F1.

If you have lots of money you can go for their Northern lights series, which being thinner have thinner edge profiles = better cutting.
their NL1 Idun is Damascus forged... really expensive but impossible to beat.

The A1 is really not that expensive for what you are getting. Compare other Laminated blades and the $. The edge is more brittle than the SRK, but it is better in every other way. Shop around and you can get one for $130

what do you mean variable outcome?
they aren't much more expensive are they?

variable outcome?
no.
variable fit/finish ... sometimes.
but the outcome is always a great knife.

Seriously, is this true? Thats certainly another reason to buy one.

the new RAT Cutlery RC6 might be a good alternative if you prefer carbon steel.
