I'd like to see the Bear Grylls knife tested. I'm sure its a nice knife, but I just don't see $650 US. It would be nice to see if it turned out like the Green Beret.

LOL
yeah, I think it would turn out like the green beret.
he is rough on some of his knives (gerbers and whatnot) but I haven't seen him ever use the baylee that rough.
the only thing is, it's SO freaking expensive!

Aye, and this is why:
Powdered steel. I keep saying, it's the steel of the future...
Veeeeery expensive to work with.
Here's a datasheet on the steel itself. http://michaelwest.dk/knive/rwl34-datasheet.pdf
Tbh it looks like a tidy blade, but if i wanted the superior edge durability of powdered steel i'd go with one of the Fallkniven hunting folders or their H1 3g (less expensive for the same product)

To be frank, I think it's just another commercial endorsement after the hype. The blade is IMHO based on good ole scandi shape, but with a secondary bevel. Leather sheath ain't realy the ideal choice for survival situation but more for the look/fashion. Don't want to sound like a dick, but it's just another Power Ranger lunchbox.
HornDog did a review on BFC. He likes it. I wouldn't pay that price for it. I haven't watched the new MvsW episodes (I don't have television and they haven't made it to the web yet), but I think he's using a partially serrated version now instead of the plain edge he started with.

No way those pics are of the same knife... Well they just look different. For instance isnt the second pic Damascus? Or just a blade finish?
See about the Bear Grylls lunchbox... IT COSTS OVER 600 $!!!!! so I'd want the lunchbox to at least sing me a song, make me dinner and do my laundry.
Yes, the T shirts are great. I like Ray Mears better and his Woodlore doesnt look too bad. I'd gladly wear a T shirt of his (well of his design, you know what I mean) - but an expensive item like the BG knife is being marketed as a tool- not a souvenir.
Meh, I'm willing to give it a chance. Powdered steel is hard to work with and expensive. Why not? i"d just rather have as much worth of INFI without the brand name.

lol. i didn't say the pics are of the same knife:D
Ray Mears is real, Bear Grylls is just another agressive marketing hype. As for the powder steel, it's hard to work with I'll give you that. However it's not worth 600$ MSRP, the price is drove up by the hype. Get yourself a Fällkniven or a custom Scandi, or loads of CS :p

Bear is supposed to be ex-SAS and always strikes me as being a prat for some of his antics on camera (ie back flipping off a tree 10 down into water in the everglades!) and Ray Mears is a real bushcraft expert.. He teaches the RAF survival skills in the field with no bs prep and backup.. He just wanders round showing them natural resources and does it for real!
Bayley who make the Bear Grylls knife make a similar sized one in the same steel at half the price without the endorsement... :headbang:

lol bro, that's why I am making the Power Ranger lunchbox comparission.
On second thought, you can do just fine with a "cheap" Mora if you know its limitation.

Bear Grylls is one heck of a guy. He is very knowledgeable and exciting to watch, and has set some world records. I think he can def hole his own, to put it mildly. The knife on the other hand I would not give you $100 for it. My 2 cents is that it is a fair to good knife with about 90% hype behind its price. There are many better options out there. Fallkniven, Swamp Rat, Busse and the list goes on. And to put its price out in front of a Busse just show how much the name plays into the $

While the knife is way overpriced, I think it would actually do okay in a test. While watching the show I have seen him baton it with a rock, use it to hammer a nail, and many other rough survival tasks. There are probably much tougher knives out there but it holds its own.
Its not worth anywhere near the price but its certainly not junk either.
Bear Grylls on the other hand is more of a showoff and his show should be watched mainly for entertainment.

TBH he is SAS.
THat should say it all... The SAS is THE regiment that the world looks at and says "......"
THere is a really nice series on YT on them..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vykq1oQ31Aw&feature=PlayList&p=0E89C30676B540B2&index=0
Anyway, the point is that these guys hike huge distances with 100lb+ equipment on their backs.
For Grylls to cover the distances that he does with his own weight only is not THAT impressive, is it?
What I don't like is that he does make it seem as though he's roughing it and surviving when he's camping in tents or in motels... (maybe- still not quite sure what the result of that controversy was)
I happen to like Ray Mears a lot better - more style, less "crocodile hunter" style of "Oh look at this, it's disgusting but i'm going to eat it to gross you out" vs "hey look, this is something disgusting but i'm going to show you how to make it edible"
THAT being said, I will still watch BG and enjoy him... it's just that the only field he's taught me something is in the "disgusting food" category...
That also being said, he's cool coz he's SAS and he's just cool. IMO Ray is better tho.
Like when he comes onto the wild horses and tries to tame one.... I wouldn't waste my time taming the thing: i'd shoot it with my bow and arrow and eat it! and i'd make myself a pack to carry the extra meat = hard to find in the wild.
Am I making sense?

Nope I think you make relevant points. There is a lot I question when I watch his shows. Like you say is he really ruffing it or is he getting a lot of aid from his crew when not on camera. All questions to be asked. I def think he know a lot about survival and If had to could adapt and overcome most situations, certainly better that 90 % of the population.
The reason he goes in with out a 100lbs of equipment is to show how to survive off the land and get rescued asap, he is not about holding up and surviving but covering the distance needed to get out with very min supply's.
He is not Ray Mears, but his show is fun and interesting to watch.
Compared to Survivor Man, Love him too. he is just about the opposite. Survivor Man is about Holding up and surviving until being rescued, where Bear is trying to get out on his own asap. Two diff styles, but both educational and fun
