i cant find anyone in my area that has a gator. can you post pictures of the pivot screw so i can see what it looks like. i'm thinking it has 2 pin holes but its been a long time since i sharpened one. give me the measurements of the blade too. i might make a blade just for the heck of it.

Rich I dont know what the steel is on this one. Its about 8 years old. Edge holding is fair. Not tuff at all either. Chip's easy. Not hard to sharpen thought. Hear of ones that are. Sorry cant be any help there. Have never taken this one apart.

yours is probably one of the good ones that just needs resharpened. i'm not sure what steel they used but its probably fairly hard since it chips easily. what caused it to chip?

Rich to be honest im not sure exactly what caused this knife to chip. It has been sitting around in a drawer for a number of years. I took it out a while back to reprofile the blade after i recieved a Edge Pro. It is very sharp now. Since i have not used it to cut anything more than paper, rope, and food.
I remember i stopped using this knife due to poor edge performance. Retention and chipping/tearing. I was probable pretty rough with it but its performance was enough for me to stop using it. I was not digging holes with it or trying to cut metal, thats all i know.
If you want to use this knife, I will send it to you. Just let me know.

would you want a blade made from some 1075 instead? i'll make a convex grind blade to replace the one in it. i'll make a tool to take it apart with too.

Well to tell you the truth mate, this is one knife that I put on the back burner. I just have other knives that are much more functional. Thank you kindly for the offer.

Hey lsutigers1010 I do not need this knife sharpened. It is razor sharp right now. I am using the same system as you. Thanks for the offer though. I see your knives are quite sharp as well.

Lol, Rich you are scaring some of us here. That is one sharp knife. I usually dont need my knives that sharp but there are always those times when you need to split hairs. :thumb:

i put an edge on a knife today after i thinned the blade a few days ago. it was sharp but i used a red compound after using an old 400 grit belt to work up a burr. its so sharp it grabs your skin easily. it goes through paper quicker than that one in the video. ask culpeper about the wheels and he will tell you the same thing about them. if you want a scarry sharp edge they will give you one. you dont need to strop the edge with leather either like i have heard of other guys doing. if you're good you can do a decent size knife in under a minute and thats even having to switch wheels.

I invested in an inexpensive bench grinder and purchased the wheels. I couldn't be happier. I love taking old knives and practicing on them. You can get almost any knife pretty damn sharp. I was fucking around sharpening an old butcher knife and the damn thing is something Jack The Ripper would be proud of.

lsutigers1010, why would sharpshooter996 want to send his knife to a 13 year old and not a professional sharpener like me?

Rich I must say your work looks top notch. I have no doubt that your wheels will preform any less than admirably. When I get the proper equipment I want to get a pair of your wheels. Not only do they look like they do a wonderful job, but im sure they do it in a fraction of the time it would take to set up another system. Thanks Rich.[/SIZE]

i use a 1/2 hp motor that i have mounted on a couple of 2x10 pieces for a stable base and to give me room for the wheels to clear. i have a link at my website where you can get the number to call and order a set. if you mention my name you will get a discount which is cheaper than anywhere else. i have a set that i bought from koval knives-jantz supply that are junk compared to the ones my friend makes. they run true and smooth compared to out of balance and wobbly like the other ones. i just sharpened a double edge recurve with my 1/4" thick wheels. they worked out great. i can do a small knife from start to finish in a minute or so. one the size of kalama in a couple minutes. a convex edge has to be done on a belt sander but can be finished off on the paper buffing wheel. here is a video showing how fast i can work up a burr. removing the burr takes about the same ammount of time. this is on a knife with a fairly decent but really dull edge. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plMbnQMQJMg

if its on a saturday when your knife gets to me the post office is closed but from monday to friday i can get it back out the same day. my buddys down at the police station can stop by and talk to dad for a few while i'm sharpening their knife and be back on their way soon after. i dont charge much either, the gerber gator for example would be $3.-$4. depending on how bad the edge was.

cool man thats a great deal, and if i can go through you ill let you hang onto the gerber to play with it a bit, and most of my edges arent bad at all but they just lack that last bit to get them shaving

just pay shipping and insurance both ways or however you feel safe shipping them and i'll fix you up. i'll make a tool to take the gator apart with too. actually i'll make a few of them so i can send anyone here that has a gator one. to save on shipping, any that can be taken apart wont be a problem if just the blade is sent. i reground a benchmade 360 blade with it out of the frame and it looks better than what it did when i got it. i'll make a holder to attach it to for sharpening. i'll use the holder for grinding blades for the folder i plan on making. it will have a 1/4" aluminum frame to accomodate the ball bearing pivot and the lock of my own design. it will be sort of a heavy duty cutter.
