I am interested in buying a new all around camp knife.
Ideally I'd like to get a Fallkniven A1, but I am super broke right now and am thinking about temporarily settling for a Cold Steel Long Hunter in 4116 Krupp. I have a spare sheath that should fit it and I'm going to put some grip tape on the handle.
I've had some bad experiences in the past with Cold Steel and some really great ones.
I got a tomahawk from them and within maybe 20 minutes of moderate use the head became loose. However, I also got a Master Hunter, which I've had no problems with.
So is any knife in 4116 Krupp worth a damn? Or is it not worth the money?
Thanks,
-Mike

Hey Mike,
I think this review will help you:

ALso i've heard good things about 4116 Krupp as a "good" steel "ok steel" etc.... IMO it seems like you can do better.
All round camp knife? So you need a knife that can process firewood (batonning) and food preparation.
Food prep = possibly stainless but certainly no coating. For that you seem to have chosen a good model, Could almost pass for a Chef's knife.
Batonning = full height flat ground, which it is, along with a saber ground edge. You could (should) probably convex the edge if you get it.
So in terms of design it seems as though you've made a nice choice....
But I would want to see what others on this forum have to say about Cold steel's "reproduction" knives: are they users or just collectors?
I also suggest an honest Ka Bar: Here (https://www.kabar.com/product_detail.jsp?productNumber=1276&mode=category&categoryId=1,2,3,7&categoryName=Hunting/Sporting)
which you know wont' let you down - the website lists it as rather expensive but I've seen them around for 40-50$ (Can)
Also, how about a Kukri machete? The whole point of the versatility of the khuks is that you can chop REALLY well with them, baton with them but the Tip is still useable and also the near portion to the handle is usefull for whitling...
How's that for multi-use?
I'll keep thinking for ya, but if you want a cheap A1 you could do as others have done and buy a Blade blank for a fair bit less expensive and cord -wrap the handle. The steel is thick enough that it doesn't make a huge difference...

Oh one more suggestion, come to think of it: how about a trio?
Machete/hatchet + Mora knife (all round use) + SAK ?
I went out with that a couple of times and didn't find myself wanting my Gerber or FK.

Thanks pulse!
Appreciate the info and the links.
I actually have a Ka bar, that I've had since I was 16 (I'm 25 now). It's always been my "go to knife." I took it out today and did some batoning and it kinda beat the hell out of it. So I wanted something that I could baton with and beat up.
I was actually looking the the cheap Kukri. Noss's test on that was pretty impressive.
I do have a Woodsman's Pal that I would use for serious chopping. And I also have a cheap machete for a workhorse. I was looking for something a bit smaller and was hoping the Long Hunter would perform on the same level as the Kukri.
However, that Ka Bar Bowie looks pretty freakin sweet. And it's only really gonna be 20 bucks more than the Long Hunter, so it might be worth a shot.
Thanks again dude!

Hey,
What Ka-bar do you have then? a USMC?
About the Ka bar bowie, be sure to check out Noss's test of it too - I was kind of impressed for a blade that isn't very expensive...
NP glad to help =D :thumb:
Still looking forward to those posts from other peeps on Krupp.... (*Pokes Kiahs and Will*) You've put a bug in my ear and it's itching!

Pulse,
I have the black ka bar with a serrated edge and a leather sheath.
I have been beating the hell out of it for years. Last year a friend put a new edge on it, so it still works.
I've kind of lost my taste for serrated edges. I got a Spyderco Rescue Assist which I would use for cutting rope or anything that would cut better with a serrated edge. But I want to not kill my ka bar, because it has been a good friend to me for so long. If I kill a $20 Long Hunter it's like, "eh, who cares?"
I am considering just getting another ka bar also. I've found some good prices. But I do like the full grind for batoning wood.
Noss's Ka Bar bowie test was cool.
I would like to see someone test the Long Hunter. I mean, it's like 20 bucks, beat the shit out of it, break it, and lets see whats up.
I can't wait to be super wealthy one day, because I'd just get three Busse Knives and call it a day.
