For any Bushcraft projects you guys do while out in the field.

Pictures are prefered, but summaries are OK.

This extends from Fuzz sticks to hunting.

Also post here any other non Knife camping gear pictures you're dyign to show!

If you have organized your bushcraft use of knives into some sort of test, please post the the Knife tests forum instead!

Thanks,

Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it. Yeah that Mora blade looked thick for a Mora. The only Mora I have is the 2000. I don't use it much or I just haven't had much of a reason to use it yet much I guess. I mainly use it to open packages.

How did you add the correction in the video the "3.5" blade" did you do that in you tube ?

Have you tried making cordage from bark/roots, or experimented with joinery (hole/pegs)?

mick the welder
09-01-2011, 04:37 PM
Yes, but it was when i was younger, used willow and pine roots. Halfed the roots (tricky, there is a technique). No joinery though...not yet

Joinery is more of wood craft than bush craft, it is moving towards Mear's where you are investing a lot of time with no real return aside from the fact that you like wood working. It isn't like you are going to sell those shelters and people are going to complain about the aesthetics of the framing construction.

This is one of the best examples of that from Mears :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vnwreTgH_M&feature=related

Excellent technique, useful to know, but how likely are you to use it if you don't like doing wood work for the sake of wood work?

Is that Fallkniven full ground or do they still ship with a tiny secondary v-bevel?

Great looking shelters. I wish I could go camping but the national forest I go to is under a burn ban due to drought. So I won't be going until we have some serious rain.

Thanks Noss. Thats too bad about the fires. Thats reflective shelter i did last christmas, it was -7 below and with the fire going and the poly sheet down it super heated the air inside to 120 degree, it was unbearable until the wood burnt down. Ha i needed to shelter from the shelter!!

Now that's a tent shelter!

I've never even imagined building something like that, I'm sure it's perfectly stable, but I would worry of the couch part falling because of a broken tie of the A bars and horizontal beam. Just to be sure, I would try securing it in place somehow, making these horizontal bars resting on the legs of the A with some pegs, to make it like that (ASCII art power)

With what gear to you make that kind of shetler?

mick the welder
09-01-2011, 08:07 PM
Some of the wood was already present from logging and previous trips there but a good old bow saw, oh and a silky folding saw. I've never had one break, and I've done it years. Its different when you are physically there, handling the wood, securing it, you know when its right. And there's no weight on the back of it, space blankets and some leaves. Fire risk is more likely and more dangerous :o

I don't prefer that type of steel for that type of knife, but other than that, high strength, fine cutting ability, durable handle, comfortable and secure, etc. . Excellent blades, many, many times I have looked at and was very close to buying a Thor.

My thoughts exactly on the steel and for that reason i moved it on. I wanted to fill the gap of mid-to-large size outdoors knife so i had more ability to chop. But i never felt comfortable chopping with VG 10, although in its defence, i spent a week in Wales with it using it daily, i had no problem with the blade/edge, but without gloves the first day left me blistered.

I liked the handles, similar to Cold Steel, however the Cold Steel grips always went on me with extended use, came right off of the Trailmaster - but handles are very person sensitive, within ranges of course. Complaints about the knurled round grips on the Reeve One Piece line are very common, extremely abrasive and no shape index at all.

The concerns I would have with VG-10 and other high carbide steels are simply that they have no advantage for that work at all. They will not of course fall apart immediately on wood working, but what you have it a steel which will tend to chip when over stressed, will not hold a high polish at a low angle and has a low grindability.

It would be a much better knife if it was laminated 420J2 and 420HC, but the marketing on that would be a nightmare due to the propaganda on high carbide steels. All of that said, still, I keep returning to the Thor, mainly aesthetics, I can't stand the grip type at all.

Thought I'd try using my tarp something like a tent configuration as it was a very wet windy weekend. As my tarp ain't that big it had to be set low so i could pitch it to the ground, i had to crawl on my shoulder blades to get in. My cheap copy of a thermorest mat had punctured and i had to put my feet in a black bin liner as they were sticking out. All in all it was a very fecking uncomfortable damp miserable set up. :thumb:

How's the performance of the axe? I'm still looking for a decent one, with winter coming I've little to do. Get's pretty damn cold up here in michigan, so much so that I tend to become a little hermit during the winter.
I'm also need to start looking for a good car, something sturdy, but I am kind of being forced to get something that has decent gas mileage... Looking into some jeeps, maybe a truck if I can find one cheap enough ( Don't exactly have money flooding out of my wallet, seeing as I've got some time till' I can legally get a job.) Any ideas are appreciated, I am not too good with cars, trying to learn how to the skills to be able to work on a car, heh let's just say I'm no car geni.

The axe was from a local hardware store, I've had it years. I reprofiled it at work, I remove the shoulder of the original edge and blended it all in convex to a zero edge then micro bevel the edge with a DC4. It's cuts and split well. It's a balance. It's heavy head for it's size. I've got other axes but Im always drawn back to it when I need to get stuff done. My advice... It's really rewarding pimping a cheap axe

Thanks. I pick that busse to replace my Fallkniven A1, similar sizes, that's about the smallest blade length I'd go with for survival tasks. It's feels solid and dependable. Simply design. It would benefits from to have a thinner edge though, I'll get round to it later
