View Full Version : Browning Crowell/Barker Competition Knife Video Destruction Test Completed
This test was filmed almost a year ago. So some things were done a little different back then. I was not doing the body weight test like I do now.
Enjoy the videos. :) They were made for you. :thumb:

Well this was a knife I was considering and still am.
Around 46 secs to get through the 4x4 thats respectable.
I like the look of the tapered tang and spine. It kinda gives it that sexy custom look.
I think AG Russell gets around $125 for them.
Thank you for the test Noss! :thumb:
Your welcome. It's a very nice blade for the price. Cameraman loves the one I gave him. If I didn't have my Busse blades I would be using this one in the field. I wish it was more tip heavy but since it's a comp knife it was made this way. It is fast and it is supposed to be but I still like more tip weight when I'm chopping big logs for the campfire. Other then this it's a nice big chopper.

Thanks for the test vids, Noss and Effingcameraman!
Very impressive where it didn't fail.
thombrogan: Your welcome. Where were you expecting it to fail ?

I was expecting the tip to not make it through the sheetmetal as often as it did.
It made some good size holes in that sheet metal also. the tip has good penetration. That sheet metal is heavy gauge. Many other knives have had a hard time penetrating it.
I need another piece this one is just about used up. :D

I was. I love the design and its tough steel (1095, 1085?) but its made over seas and no telling how well the heat treat was done. I will get one though but its no FFBM. I bought one based on your tests. I cant see ever damaging the thing!

Dang!
I found a Browning Crowell Barker for $82.50 I hope its worth it?
I can't watch the video as they blocked YouTube at work : (
Sorry to dig up an old thread but I am pretty excited about the knife ; )

I watched all the videos this evening at home and I am a little concerned of it snapping during tip bending and again hammering the handle, the stabbing sheet metal test looked great as it has great penetration.
It seemed to do well in the outdoors video chopping and batoning fire wood and those will be my use of the knife mostly. It appears to hold an edge well also.
I'll post some pictures of it Thursday when it arrives along with a Cold Steel Boar Hunter.

I really like my Competition Chopper. I have used it on downed tree limbs in my yards several times. I think that you will really be impressed by how light it is and how effectively it chops :thumb:.

The 82.50 for the knife is my cost from the distributor and full retail is $169 The high cost seems to stem from the designer and signature royalties as the knife is made in Taiwan and should cost the same as any other made there.
I wish I could find a knife of this style and size for about $10 cost.
The KA-BAR Becker BK9 is $56 cost and KA-BAR is pricey. The market and pricing of knives is high and whatever the maker believes the market will pay. I can get a Bowie knife of the same size made in China for $6.80 from another distributor for comparison. Another comparitive price is the China Made Cheaper Than Dirt Rough Use Knife or Night Defender which is $5.06 at cost. The manufacturer, distributor will also build to specification but I am not sure of the cost.
The way I see it steel is steel not too many secrets to know and if heat treated properly then a quality durable knife can be made inexpensively. I like to get a busse at cost but they seem sell direct only and thereby control the pricing. Right now I am just gathering information and knowledge for the future.
It's a nice knife. It's not as durable as a FBM but it works well. It's light and fast we were chopping through 1.5" trees in about 1 chop in the woods. It's quick and will make a good camp knife.
No problem on digging up old threads we don't have that rule here or many rules at all really.
