View Full Version : RMD and Grunt: Short Comparison Test

This was a short test I did a while back.

I only did simple tasks.

This test is just between the RMD and Grunt. It was really wet and raining during the test and I was really satisfied when I finished the test. Both knives were stropped and are very sharp.

At the time, it was fairly dark.

Just before the test I was able to catch the flock of geese in the picture above. They flew right over me.

On with the simple test.

Here are the two knives side by side on the test log.

First was the 25 chop test.

Then I did a little fuzzing up.

RMD fuzziness.

Grunt fuzziness.

When I finished it was still quite dark.

That was about it for the test. As I said it was quick and simple test. I also did the test with leather gloves.

Conclusion:

On the 25 chop test, the grunt was better. It is a larger knife and can generate more force. The convex ground was amazing at this area. It bit really deep and was fairly quick at chopping. If the Grunt can out chop the RMD, it will definitely out chop the DMDC. The handle on the grunt was comfortable as long as my hand did not slip to end. The RMDs handle was also very comfortable, however, I would frequently slip as I was wearing gloves.

On making the fuzzy sticks, the convex grind failed me. The RMD, possibly because it was been stropped so much, was much easier in slicing wood. The convex ground would bite, proceed along the log for a fair amount and just pop out the slice of wood. It was annoying.

I really like both knives. I have finally found the perfect replacement for my CSK. The Grunt is larger and probably better than my CSK. I also really do like the convex ground on the knife. It is very well done. Cloak was also nice enough to give me some 600 grit wet&dry sand paper for me to sharpen on.

My only complaint is the handle on the Grunt. The sudden drop in the last bit of the handle is really annoying when I chopped with it. My pinky finger would get constantly jammed. The Res-C handles of has remedied that problem with a more shallow slope and a stickier grip. The Kraton handles are well molded and are still comfortable.

Thanks for the test sharp! Yeah, I can't wait to get out camping and try my new Grunt out. By all indications it really seems to be an all around performer, and for the cost, I can't complain. Do you know if the Grunt is full tang? It's hard to tell, Id like to think that it is...

FOBOS,

The grunt is not full tang. I believe the set up is very similar to the Scrap Yard knives though. It's almost full tang. Still a very good knife.

Also one thing to mention, at first I thought the swedge would make the blade very weak for batoning, like the Red Scorpion 6 WSK, but it does not. The swedge will eat your baton stick but the blades will not break. I did this on some really dry wood that I could not get through. The blade was, too short and I was just using the very tip of the Grunt to get it down. I got about half way and took the grunt out.

The knife is very tough for the money. I'm sort of sad I lost it. But hey, it was only 20 bucks.

Thats why I bought two! One to show and one to blow, or dent, or chip or... Now I'm going to get a couple of the BJ " smalls", they really look to be good hunting knives and again for the cost whats to loose?

Good test Sharp. I like the pics. The birds are a very artistic touch. Makes chopping the crap out of wood seem classy.

Izan,

Thanks, but unfortunately and fortunately I'm not. I don't think any rich ass bastard would be interested in primitive bushcraft..... Well, I've always been the outcast. :D But seriously, the houses aren't that big.

Tac45,

Bushcraft is always classy, no matter what the conditions.

I've got some more comparison size shots.

That will be great Noss. Thanks for going the extra mile to test all these knives. I can't wait to see how the Grunt performs. Maybe I will be dissapointed in it. But the feel, helft and blade thickness make me think that it will do well, at least until the dreaded Tang Sledge Slaps!

FOBOS,

I don't think you should feel bad considering it's one of the few production knives that use a convex edge. I only had mine for a week and I knew that it would be a great knife.

Sharp, where did your Grunt fail? Did you break it at the tip or handle? Did you ever have time to sharpen it, cause I guess with a convex edge you have to use a different technique than other grinds to get the edge back.

Sharp

I didn't fail. I lost it.

And yes I did sharpen after a long day chopping. I use the mouse pad and sandpaper method. It got a wicked sharp mirror edge.

I really wish I didn't lose it but for 20 bucks.... well technically it retails for 100+ so I am pretty pissed.

But, I've got a YKLE :D

Good comparison sharp. I really like the grunt, it looks like a great knife.
I am a huge fan of convex grinds because they bite really deep when chopping.

Cool Noss! I can't wait either. Put that baby through hell (as you allways do) and back. I'm interested to see how it holds up to the chopping concrete test, I think thats where it will start to fail. I think the steel is comprable to AUS 8, or 10. Anyway, thanks again for doing the tests.

It's amazing that these things are selling for twenty dollars. I bet they are not selling them at a loss either. I wonder what the actual cost of making it is?

DAMN !! That was fast. I just received the BJ Grunt. It's a nice looking blade. It has a very nice sharp convex edge one it. It feels great in my hand. I'll post some photos in a while.

Thats why I bought two of them and maybe a couple more for the asking price. I am interested to see whats under the handle material: partial tang, half tang, etc. I also think that the Grunt feels very good in the hand and the blade does inspire confidence. I am going to have a camp fire in my yard this evening, so I will put the Grunt through some cutting for the first time. Can't wait for the tests Noss. So long from Central Montana.

FOBOS have fun with them, they are great knives and extremely good for the money.

Edge retention and toughness isn't too bad either.

I ordered me another Grunt. I'm going to D-test one. I have been playing with it alot. It's a nice functional blade for cutting tasks. I'm really liking it. In fact it's one of the nicest fixed blades I have ever seen for only 25 bucks. I'm curious to see how it does under stress.
