View Full Version : Cheaper Than Dirt Rough Use Knife Video Destruction Test Completed
The cheaper than dirt knife did fantastic. It almost made it all the way through the test.
I finally broke it on the side tang impacts. It beat some very expensive knives and it only costs 10 bucks.
I have added a 1/4 feature to the ratings since there are so many different areas to look at when I decide a rating. Sometimes I'm stuck in th middle so this will help.So a rating my be 4 .5 swords. I base the rating not just on toughness and strength but factor in function as well. This is never going to be perfect but it helps. It's always on video so everyone can judge what they see.
The videos are in 8 parts.
Enjoy the videos. They were made for you. :)
Also I mentioned the Ranger a few times for comparison. It's no singled out. It is just fresh one my mind at the moment. I have broke many tips in the sheet metal including the Scrapper 6
and others. Other knives like the Red scorpion 6 and the cold Steel SRK have broke during the body weight test.

That thing is a beast man! The blade held up better than the scrapper and the A1 for sure with the concrete cutting, so why only 4.75 rating???
For 10 bucks and how bad ass it was, it really is making the Ranger kids all teary eyed, lol.
It probably does deserve a better rating. I was torn with what to give. I figured the A1 chopped better. The A1 also had an exposed tang that would not damage the handle like
The cheaper then dirt knife suffered.
I have added some tests that I didn't do on some of the pastknives. I was trying to be fair.
What rating would you give it. ?
I'll tell you what I'll start a poll and see what everyones feed back is. At least I can kind of get an Idea of how the tests are viewed. by others.

I love the Cameraman's comment
"Fucking Chinese"
:D
There are a bunch of knives out there that look like this under different brands. CTD, S&W, MTech, Frost, and Maxam are the ones I know of. I'm not sure which ones are the same knife rebranded and which are completely different knives. I know the "Maxam" branded ones are junk. They are machete thin and falling apart in the package. The S&W has a higher grind and slightly different handle, and Ashtxsniper said he thought it was better made than his CTD.
Anyway. Awesome test. I figured it would do well.
It has some good comments on the CTD web page .http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/DBA443-44890-1259.html
Noss, the end of the last vid shows the broken CRK. Oops.
NO !! I never noticed that. Crap. LOL
I just removed the video. I'll fix it.. and re upload it. Thanks for pointing that out.
I didn't notice it either. tholiver on BF pointed it out in the RD-7 thread.
Crap. I used three different DVD disks that night. It got mixed up in the transfer.

Thanks Noss, now I got to go out and buy a couple of those Chinese knives. I can't believe how well that thing held up. With a better sharpening, it would be an excellent field knife. Good job Noss!

Wow...there are some knife companies that need to be embarrassed by this one.

Yes, indeed. It's funny how well some of the cheapies perform during Noss' tests and how poorly some of the more expensive ones do. We've all read the numerous posts at the other places on how Noss' tests aren't valid, aren't scientific, don't show what a knife is supposed to be used for, blah, blah, blah. But I gotta tell you, when I see Noss subjecting a knife like this one or the G.I. Tanto to the exact same series of tests as knives costing 10x more and the cheap ones actually do better in several areas, it forces me to rethink the issue of how much one needs to spend to get something that will last and continue to perform. Simple as that.
I'd like to have seen some more extensive edge holding tests on the CTD prior to destruction, but other than that, you did a great job as always, Noss.
G. Scott H.: Welcome to the forum. I have another CTD knife. Different model. I'll see about doing some edge retention tests on it. Cutting a bunch of rope or something. They don't cut bad. You can work a good edge on them easy. I have a few SOGs that I can not sharpen worth a damn. I just get pissed after 45 minuets and put them away.
I think I'm going to go down and buy a lansky. I want a edge pro but I don't want to spend the money at the moment.

Thanks, man. Like I said in the RD7 thread, no need to hack rope for half a day, just some basic stuff to show how the edge will hold up. I was glad to see it still cut the webbing so well after batonning. Looks promising.

Thanks for the test, that was a fun one. I want that knife, especially for that price.
I think it is made by frost cutlery. A while back, I was watching the late night knife show and they had one in a huge set and it looked like that. They also had a kukri that was the same size and had the same handle.

After watching the clips & reading the reviews I decided I wanted/needed one. No go, CTD wont ship OS(Australia) . I could of done with a tough cheap-ass bang-em-up blade as well.
Keep it up Noss, sweet clips man.

Well if you feel you must have this thing it is available from many sources for the same or near same money. A little research tells me that it is a frost cutlery blade available from budk or eknifeworks and probably a host of others. if they are in fact 440 then the steel is imported from germany into china where it is worked into what it has become and then shipped over here. Quite a lot of movement involved and at the selling price i would wonder where labor comes in the picture.

What they don't ship to Australia! Obviously they are scared we will start making them and brand them Cheap As Piss.

They are 3/16" thick. about 4.8mm at least this is what the ones I had measured. Not sure it they can vary some.

I have all three models Bowie, Spear and Kukri. They were purchased as China Made "Night Defender" All are labeled with China and Stainless on the blades.
The Spear Point blade seems "slightly" thinner than the others and the Bowie seems the thickest; although I haven't actually measured the blades. I'll do that later and let you know for sure.
I've used it a few times while camping and you can baton and chop with it until you wear yourself out without failure (of the knife) ; )

yeah pretty much the same thing. One was marked 440 steel on the blade.

there is no 440 on my blade , just a " stainless" on one side.
Only one of mine was marked 440. I don't have them now as I D-tested them all. Only one for the camera. The others I just experimented with off camera. :D

All of mine (six) are unmarked. The blades are 4mm each. The box shows a picture and description of the knife with China and Stainless Steel and Heavy Use. The boxes are also labled Bowie Defender, Kukri Defender and Spear Point Defender. All are wonderful values for camp knives. If only they were 10 inches instead of eight : ( which is why I've began to use the Cold Steel 12 inch machete as a primary camp knife.

I am not a Bowie knife fan. I like my Browning Competition knife without the guard and the Cold Steel 12 inch Sax and Barong machetes. Also the brass is too bright for my liking. The Cold Steel 12 inch Bowie machete is pretty nice if you like the Bowie style, I have a couple of them also.
