Snake hunting in Mississippi
This is my Benchmade Offsider I call the "Snake Handler" Not only do we "bush it"in the woods with knives only, we take Cottonmouths, like these, with knives only.
Cool:cool: I've never seen anyone kill a cottonmouth with a knife like that. I assume you pinned his head before you stabbed him ? We have plenty of those snakes were I go camping. They are some mean bastards. They will stand their ground and fight. We can't just chase them off. We just have to go around them.

No head pinning. The trick is to get up real close, divert him, and then with a fast wrist snap, pop him in the spine behind the head cutting his spinal cord (have to keep knife like a razor!). The stab is just to finish him off. They are very aggressive, and to make it even tougher, these were taken in 5 foot deep swamp water. An extreme adrenaline rush accompanies! I will send more photos later, and maybe a video to get the full jist. Thanks for checking it out.
You should make a video of it.

Tried all day and night to take some of these elusive jokers, till I stepped in a hole and rolled my ankle and tore some tendons, then had to pack it out of the swamps. Did have a great time building shelter and fires and bushcrafting with our knives and friends . The cast aint that fun, but "IF IT DON'T HURT, IT AINT WORTH IT!" Will get them next time, with photos!

While abusing my body I abused my knife also. It is a discotinued Benchmade Fecas Offsider. I beliiev it to be there most sturdy knife in the last few years with a 7 1/2 by 1/4 inch blade. To be a spear point it is an amazing chopper, and holds and receives a razor edge quite easily. After chopping several medium trees for shelter, and batonig hardwood for fire it was still in good shape . After camping hacked through a pressure treated 4x4's, i batoned it through a 4x4, and a 2x6, then chiseled out a 3x3 hole through a 2x6. after a whet rock and ceramic rod it would shave hair the entire length of blade in about ten minutes. casualties? beside torn ligaments in my leg, the handle began to come loose at tang end. There some sort of rubber scales that have great grip, but proved to be weak. took them off and double 550 wrapped it, and like it better. All in all I consdider it a good survival knife, though it is designed more for fighting/tactical
Sorry to hear about your injuries. Good to hear you still had some knife fun even though you didn't find any snakes to kill.

I want to start comparing different blades in wilderness/jungle survival situations. From basis performance(shelter, fire) to taking a snake. One knife that has always worked well for me in the bush is an Ontario Spec Plus Survival. It is a great chopper, 10 in. blade, and tough as nails and holds a razor edge. In the swamps blades under 8 inches don't work well for me. If ya'll have any that you would like to see in this situation let me know. (and send me the knife!) just kidding.I will let you know later what blades I have tried, and what I think of them.

Yeah, poor creature
Years ago while stomping around in the woods, going down a trail toward a small pond, walked right up on a black snake coiled up, and hissing his ass off, I didn't think much about it until afterwards, it pissed me off, so I just froze, lowered my Remington 870 real slow and raked his ass off the trail with some bird shot I had loaded up, after thinking about it, when he was hissing at me, the inside of his mouth was white as hell, and it came to me, that WAS a damn cotton mouth....

Yeah, they are easy to identify, brown, gray, or blackish depending on age and if they are wet or dry. But the key is the shape of the head (triangular, not narrow) stout thick body and the white lining in the mouth. They are very aggresive also.
Yea, I've seen tons of "Black Snakes", they haul ass when they see you, but this thing didn't, it stayed right there, coiled up and started hissing it's ass off,....so I turned it into food for the worms and whatever

They are sometimes black, not jet black, but they still look like the one in the picture.
