Cheaper Than Dirt Rough Use Knife Cutting Test

I went out with my other CTD knife an did a cutting test.

I begin by cutting cardboard then I cut 50 feet of Sisal rope in to roughly fist wide lengths. I cut another piece of cardboard to check the edge. It was still sharp and sliced right through it. I cut another 50 feet of 1/4" Sisal rope. Then cut some more cardboard. Again with no edge loss. The knife held its edge very well during the test.

The video are in 2 parts about 19 minutes long. The test was videoed in one continuous shot from beginning to end.

I've been wondering about comparing my ranger, scrapyard and kabar (the kabar would be like a control) in a cutting test, but I need something that dulls knives quick, and that I could easily get...
(I don't think I will be able to do it anytime soon though)

The knife holds a fine edge, much better then I expected.
For 10 bucks its almost perfect. I think I've found my next knife purchase.

FOBOS: It didn't take to long to work the edge. The steel responds well to a stone like it should. I have a few SOG's in stainless steel and I can't sharpen them well at all.

The centerline of the edge would be my concern. How much shine does it have after cutting when held under a good light?

Yes it is. If you have sharpened your knife correctly when you hold it under a light there will be no shine on the centerline of the edge. If after cutting something the line (edge) appears shiny it is dulling and you can usually tell which steels will hold an edge longer just by cutting some cardboard or rope with a few knives of different steels and similar edge configurations and looking at them under a light. ohhh blades with a thick blade (behind the edge) cant be compared to thinner ones because they will not hold a razor sharp shaving edge (an edge that will cleanly remove facial hair...not arm hair) very long no matter what kind of steel it is made from. Thats why straight razors have a full hollow grind.

Go to your local grocer and get lots of cardboard and cut the amount of cardboard Lynn Thompson's crew cut with the master hunter or even the stainless (japanese) folders... I would do it for you but i don't have a camera and am not willing to buy one of these things.

Many thanks, Noss. :cool: Cardboard and sisal are both pretty damn abrasive, so that bodes well for these blades. It may not have been Cold Steel's "2,000 cuts through cardboard/rope", but big deal. It was plenty to show the knife WILL hold a decent enough edge for utility purposes. So, these blades are both super tough AND hold a reasonable edge. Man, those Chinese kids make some decent knives! :eek::D

I bought a Fenix TK10 it's a nice torch and it has a great price. It is supper bright in high mode. It makes my sure fires look dim. The fit an finish is great also.

I must admit I find the multicam a bold fashion statement. Obviously 'THE LEADER' (insert chant here) should have a distinguishing characteristic. The ACU bandana could work for this. Once the robes are sorted out we need to look at suitable foot wear. Something that says "sure we are a cult but we are different". Yes. I know ACU refers to the uniform itself, but ACU, ACUPAT, etc. have become synonymous with the Army's UCP pattern as well as with the uniform (as you well know, smartass!). :D

How 'bout a compromise? The body of the robe will be Multicam, the left sleeve will be UCP, and the right sleeve will be MARPAT. Also, each of us will get a pair of gloves to go with the robe. One in coyote and one in foliage green. :eek:

One more thing on cutting cardboard if none of you have cut a lot of cardboard and i am talking about large flats when you continually cut the cardboard it will heat your blade up to the point that it will burn you! that is why i suggested cutting a large quantity of it. If your edge is thin it will wear it away quickly but if the blade is also thin it will still seemingly cut for a considerable amount of time but if the blade is thick it will be tearing the cardboard in short order after the edge is worn away.

actually, I was just batonign some of the hardest wood I'd eve batoned (with my DFLE. I think the wood was some kind of locsust) and the blade got so hot you couldn't even put your hand on it for moe than a few seconds!

I'm gonna see if I can get some cardboard for some cutting.
