I just don't know what could have done this. It was used for batoning and never hit any metal. I pounded it a lot, but really, could wood "stamp" a notch in the back of the blade? I scraped the coating off to see it in better detail. There is a possibility that the notch is there due to factory processing and it was just covered with epoxy. To be clear, i understand that the functionality of the knife won't be affected, but i was wondering what could have done that.

There is no way the wood could do that while batonning. It most certainly was done in the factory. What knife is that anyway?

I agree it looks like something from the factory, either a flaw or just an artifact from the manufacturing process that wasn't ground out during final finishing. I agree too that it shouldn't hurt the strength of the blade. If it bugs you, though, as long as you have the coating scraped away, you could go over that part of the spine with a coarse file, then a finer file, and then a scotch-brite pad to even out the finish.
